Why via Assam, not direct? There is no airport anywhere close to Tawang inside Arunachal. The nearest usable one is Guwahati (GAU) — Tawang is a 2-day mountain drive (≈ 530 km, 12+ hrs) via Sela Pass (13,700 ft). Why base in Tezpur (Assam) and not Bhalukpong? Tezpur is a proper town halfway between Guwahati and the Arunachal border — better 3★ hotel stock, restaurants, pharmacies, and a comfortable 4-hr drive from GAU instead of 6 hrs to Bhalukpong. We still pass through Bhalukpong for the mandatory ILP check.

Day 1 · Mon 25 May Kolkata → Guwahati → Tezpur (Assam)
Earliest CCU → GAU flight (target landing ≤ 09:00).
Meet pre-booked SUV at Guwahati airport. Drive GAU → Tezpur (≈ 180 km / 4 hrs) via NH-15 along the Brahmaputra.
Arrive Tezpur early afternoon. Quick lunch, then relaxed local sight: Agnigarh Hill, Cole Park or Mahabhairav Temple.
Tezpur is a proper Assam town on the north bank of the Brahmaputra — good 3★ hotels, pharmacies, restaurants. Much gentler Day 1 than driving all the way to Bhalukpong.
Day 2 · Tue 26 May Tezpur → Bhalukpong (ILP) → Bomdila → Dirang
Early start (~07:00). Drive Tezpur → Bhalukpong (≈ 60 km / 1.5 hrs).
Total Day 2 drive ≈ 205 km / 7 hrs including stops. Tougher than Day 1, but payoff starts here.
Day 3 · Wed 27 May Dirang → Sela Pass → Tawang
Early start. Drive Dirang → Sela Pass (13,700 ft) → Jaswant Garh → Jung Falls → Tawang (≈ 140 km / 6–7 hrs).
Short stops for photos & acclimatisation.
Evening at leisure in Tawang town (3,050 m). Drink plenty of water.
Overnight: Tawang (Treebo Yangsel / Dondrub / Hotel Tawang View).
Sela Pass weather turns fast — keep 1 hr buffer. If the pass closes, the operator will hold you at Dirang until Army opens it.
Day 4 · Thu 28 May Tawang — Bumla Pass & Madhuri Lake
Full-day excursion (permit day, booked Day 3): Bumla Pass (15,200 ft, India-China border), Shonga-tser / Madhuri Lake, P.T. Tso Lake.
Return afternoon. Visit Tawang Monastery (Galden Namgey Lhatse), War Memorial, Craft Centre.
Overnight: Tawang.
Bumla is open to civilians only Mon–Sat; road condition subject to Army clearance.
Day 5 · Fri 29 May Tawang → Dirang → Bhalukpong → Tezpur
Long drive day: Tawang → Sela → Dirang → Bomdila → Bhalukpong (ILP exit) → Tezpur (≈ 380 km / 11 hrs).
Leave Tawang by 05:30–06:00. Light breakfast in Dirang, lunch in Bomdila/Bhalukpong.
Alternate (recommended if tired): split this into two — overnight at Dirang, drive Dirang → Tezpur the next morning. But then Day 6 becomes an 8-hr day before an evening flight; only works if your flight is after 8 pm.
Overnight: Tezpur (KRC Palace / Mayflower — same property as Day 1 ideally, for familiarity + possible locker-storage of non-essential bags).
Having Tezpur as the Day-5 stop is the whole reason we're not in Bhalukpong — proper hotel shower, dinner, laundry service, and an easy 4-hr drive to the airport the next morning.
Day 6 · Sat 30 May Tezpur → Guwahati → Kolkata
Relaxed morning in Tezpur. Drive Tezpur → GAU airport (≈ 180 km / 4 hrs). Leave by 10:00 for a 4–5 pm flight, or by 13:00 for a 7+ pm flight.
Evening flight GAU → CCU. Trip ends.

Pre-book all 5 hotels — Tawang fills up on weekends.
Inform operator you want Bumla on Day 4 (permit needs 1-day processing in Tawang).
Pack: heavy jacket, gloves, cap (Sela & Bumla < 0 °C even in May), Diamox (altitude), sunglasses.
8. Risks & notes
Altitude: Sela Pass 13,700 ft, Bumla 15,200 ft. Acclimatise at Dirang. Consult doctor about Diamox.
Weather: Late May = occasional rain, Sela pass can close after landslides. Keep a buffer plan.
Tight schedule: 5 nights is the bare minimum. If flight cancels on Day 1, the whole Tawang leg is at risk. Consider adding 1 buffer day if possible.
Long Day 5: Tawang → Tezpur is ~11 hrs of driving in one day. If your operator is OK with it, consider splitting the Day-5 drive with an overnight at Dirang, and doing Dirang → Tezpur → GAU (8 hrs) on Day 6 — only if your return flight is after 8 pm.
Road condition: Balipara–Bomdila stretch is under widening in 2026 — expect delays.
Mobile: Only BSNL & Jio work reliably beyond Bomdila; no signal on Sela & Bumla routes.
